The Sacrament of Baptism initiates your child into the faith community. Baptism is the first Sacrament celebrated in the process of becoming a full member of the Church community.
St. Maria Goretti Parishioners are invited and encouraged to have their children baptized. We invite you to worship with us as a family on a regular basis and encourage all families to become involved in the spiritual life of the Parish.

Please note, the Diocese of Sacramento requires that parents and Godparents must participate in the baptismal preparation program prior to the baptism being scheduled. The class is held monthly, 1st Thursday from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm. To register, please contact the Parish Office.

PLEASE ARRANGE FOR CHILD CARE IF YOU ARE ATTENDING.
The child must have at least one official Godparent. This is a person who is at least 16 years old; a baptized Catholic who has received the sacrament of Confirmation; currently practicing his/her Catholic faith; and if married is married in the Catholic Church. Each Godparent must attend the baptism class. Other persons who have provided information on the forms may fully participate in the baptism as a Christian Witness.
Children, parents and Godparents attend the 9-months RCIA classes. Baptism takes place during the Easter Vigil.
Adults who wish to become baptized in the Catholic Faith are encouraged to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Learn more about RCIA under the Faith Formation tab.

The Code of Canon Law (1983) of the Roman Catholic Church requires:
Canon 873: “There is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each.”
Canon 874 §1: “To be permitted to take on the function of a sponsor a person must:
be designated by the one to be baptized, by the parents or the person who takes their place, or in their absence by the pastor or minister and have the aptitude and intention of fulfilling this function;
have completed the sixteenth year of age, unless the diocesan bishop has established another age, or the pastor or minister has granted an exception for a just cause;
be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on;
not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared;
not be the father or mother of the one to be baptized.”
Canon 874 §2: “A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community is not to participate except together with a Catholic sponsor and then only as a witness of the baptism.
